M2M applications require not only sensors and communication features. The battery function for the majority of applications is a crucial issue. The power consumption of M2M devices for data storage and networking one of the most important issue to address. This is a particular challenge for devices that are expected to operate over many years as machines that are not connected to the mains rely on batteries. Also, the battery function for the majority of applications is essential in a backup power mode, when there is a primary power loss. Other challenges the designers have to face are the battery temperature tolerance for climate uncontrolled conditions or high temperatures.
M2M Forum 2014 will feature a special conference session on M2M technologies and solutions focused on power generation and long-life-batteries for remote M2M applications.
